Why Women Make Fantastic Leaders

Women For The Future

McKinsey & Company’s Women in the Workplace 2021 report indicates that in promoting every 100 men to managerial roles, they only promote 86 women in American companies. With lack of representation at the manager level, fewer women are eligible for promotion to C-suite roles. But women are just as qualified as men, why is there so much disparity?

The “qualities” of a leader — as well as the path to achieve leadership roles — are still largely based on an outdated male model that shuts women out. What are some barriers preventing women from rising up?

In the research conducted by McKinsey & Company, they found out that female leaders have given more time to their employees, especially at the onset of the pandemic, which strained the world from all sectors.

They provide more support from checking up on their staff or managing their workload than their male colleagues, but their extra time and effort go unnoticed.

Compared to decades before, there were practically no women at any position other than entry levels. However, as it stands now, the percentage of females in the high ranks is still the minority. The issue further exacerbates the stress and burnout for women since it is harder for them to reach better career choices if systematically, there is a lesser percentage of them gaining a good position compared to men.

Some sectors are still dominated by men, like the tech industry, with about 20% of women having occupations in the sector. On the other hand, other jobs over-represent females, such as hospitality and food service.

The issue of gendered jobs lessens the possibility of women having roles in occupations with a lower female ratio since they will be bombarded with stereotypes and possible discrimination from being under-represented.

With the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, women, in general, have experienced an increase in burnout. The factors stated above are only some but portray a bigger picture of women’s struggle in their respective workforce.

Although the majority of people at the top of organizations are men, studies show that it is actually women who have what it takes to effectively lead. Here are reasons why women are amazing and what we can learn from them.

While this skill is a product of geder inequality where women work overtime to manage a family, it cannot be denied that it enhances their multi-tasking ability. It is not uncommon for women to juggle many responsibilities, from their work life to their family’s needs to their own. Therefore, they have the expertise to handle quick decisions amidst uncertain situations since they can balance several factors simultaneously.

From a thorough analysis of the Harvard Business Review, they conducted assessments from a body of 60,000 leaders, 40 thousand men, and 20 thousand women. The examination concluded that female leaders were better at handling their overall responsibilities in times of crisis.

Characteristics such as initiative, serving as motivation for their members, and better collaboration have a better rating score in the analysis compared to men.

In the same study, the leader’s members were also assessed and questioned about their overall satisfaction with their head’s capabilities.

From the analysis, the respondent’s focus on interpersonal skills nicely situated women as doing better. The characteristics described earlier present the strength of female leaders.

Furthermore, other traits, such as building workforce relationship, demonstrates female leaders have a better awareness of their colleagues’ well-being and possible fears.

These traits are especially prevalent in crises when morale and psyche are low. Female leaders have the tools to address members’ concerns and let them feel they are humans, which is vital to retain the company’s life force, which is the people themselves.

The disproportionate ratio of women in higher positions lets the women who are already leaders have the perspective to provide that men cannot present. Circumstances such as biological factors like menstruation and pregnancy can be addressed and supported better by their female leaders since they experience it firsthand.

The coronavirus pandemic gave the light to women to showcase their true capabilities. Studies have sprung up that demonstrate how women have the upper hand in many factors. Furthermore, the underdog position of women lets them strive better to accomplish true equality in the working world.

Lastly, these female leaders must be given the respect and recognition they deserve. Women may handle a myriad of responsibilities, but they are human too. Therefore, providing them with the right mentorship and guidance pushes them to have the right path to becoming great.
