Italy’s Digital Nomad Visa: What You Need to Know

Italy has officially introduced its digital nomad visa. The Italy digital nomad visa, launched in 2022, allows freelancers, remote full-time employees, and self-employed individuals to live and work in Italy long-term.

Family Inclusion

Digital nomads can bring their family members to Italy. However, the final decision on granting a residence permit for family reasons rests with Italy’s police headquarters.

Also, an additional €3,500 to €4,000 in savings is required for each new family member.

Required Documents

Apart from the ones provided earlier, here are the other required documents needed to avail of the digital nomad visa.

  • A passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the visa expiration.
  • Two recent passport-size photos.
  • A completed visa application form from the Italian Consular office.
  • A work contract with a company.
  • Proof of accommodation.
  • Health insurance or Italian National Health Service enrollment (€2,000/year).
  • Visa application fee payment (€116).

Application Process

  1. Schedule an appointment with the relevant Italian Consulate 2-4 months ahead.
  2. Complete and submit the visa application form.
  3. Pay the application fee.
  4. Submit all required documents to the Italian diplomatic or consular office.
  5. Wait for 30-90 days for visa processing.

Post-Visa Approval

  • Apply for a Permit to Stay (“Permesso di Soggiorno”) within 8 days of arriving in Italy.
  • Obtain a tax identification number (“Codice Fiscale”).
  • Apply for a VAT number if performing business or professional activities in Italy.
